Socio-Economic Rehabilitation After Quarrying

Recognizing the importance of community environmental interactions in creating positive post-mining legacies

WHAT IS CESMINE?

CESMINE is an EU-funded project that explores the role of community environmental interactions and benefits (so-called cultural ecosystem services) in successful transition from mining to post-mining economies and how different post-mining land use planning and management practices contribute to this transition. CESMINE’s focus is on small-scale mining producing industrial minerals and construction materials, such as natural stone, sand, gravel, limestone, and salt – so-called quarrying.  The project is based at the research group Social-Ecological Interactions in Agricultural Systems.

OUR MOTIVATION

Mining and quarrying remain of great economic importance for the EU. Sensitive ecosystems associated with cultural and community values are being reshaped by irreversible landscape changes. These values and other interactions between people and ecosystems contribute to place attachment, foster community cohesion, and are essential for human health and well-being. Incorporating them to mine rehabilitation contributes to effective socio-ecological recovery in post-mining regions.

OUR VISION

CESMINE creates a platform for raising awareness and sharing knowledge about the wide range of community benefits and other cultural ecosystem services provided by rehabilitated mines and quarries and their importance for creating positive post-closure legacies in mining affected regions.
